NB Power, 2016 Recipient of Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture Award

In this presentation, Duff Boyd will talk about how the culture at NB Power garnered them this prestigious award, and the work they’ve done to understand the impact their organizational environment has on individual employee performance.

What Would Your Perfect Day Look Like?

Is it one where systems are in place, processes and best practices are followed, opportunities are seized, and incidents are avoided? As CEO, you must understand the cumulative cultural disposition of your organization to create an environment that truly supports this thinking and behaviour. In his book, Humble Inquiry: The Gentle Art of Asking Instead of Telling, Edgar H. Schein builds the case for Humble Inquiry as a means of fostering stronger relationships, reliable communication, and greater collaboration, and talks specifically about the importance of this behaviour in high-hazard environments. In this session, we’ll explore this concept, and we’ll engage in a discussion that will enhance your sense of situational awareness and interaction consciousness so that you can unlock the potential for a perfect day.

“The professional motivation to explore Humble Inquiry more extensively comes from the insights I have gained over the past fifty years of consulting with various organizations. Especially in the high hazard industries in which the problems of safety are paramount…In airplane crashes and chemical industry accidents, in the infrequent but serious nuclear plant accidents, in the NASA Challenger and Columbia disasters, and in the British Petroleum gulf spill, a common finding is that lower-ranking employees had information that would have prevented or lessened the consequences of the accident, but either it was not passed up to higher levels, or it was ignored, or it was overridden.”
